RAF 1770's Airfields - FSX Acceleration

The scenery on offer here is free for individual use, but must not be sold for profit or traded in any way.  By downloading scenery or scenery elements you are agreeing to the terms and conditions imposed.  In some cases, the working documents are included in downloads to allow for further development of selected items of scenery.

All of the scenery elements here are created by Paul Pursglove, unless otherwise stated.

In the 1970's I visited a lot of RAF airfields as an Air Cadet and a Civilian Instructor. Having Microsoft FSX with Acceleration, I thought it would be interesting to recreate some of the airfields and fly aircraft that I remember, to and from them. There are several good Sim Models available for free, from interested individuals. However, not all of them are 1970's style and there are gaps in availability.

The following download links provide my attempts to fill the gap. These airfields have been produced for Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) with Acceleration.

On my simulator, I load the airfield folders into a folder in the Scenery folder called RAF. This keeps the airfield files separate from Civil and Microlite. Within the Named Airfield folder, the .bgl files are placed in a separate folder called Scenery and any texture files are placed in a separate folder called Textures. Ted Andrews STATIC OBJECT LIBRARY needs to be placed in the FSX scenery folder for these airfields to display correctly.

Click on the links and they should be automatically downloaded to your computers Downloads folder

The control tower still exists, but the airfield is now a housing development.

RAF Thorney Island

In the 1970's this station was operating C130k Hercules transports and other large aircraft.  land access was across a tidal marsh and there were traffic lights on the main runways to stop cars crossing during landings and take offs.

The station is closed and mature trees are growing on parts of the remaining runway.

RAF Lindholme

Situated in South Yorkshire, south of Thorne and under care and maintenance in the seventies, Lindholme became the home of 643 GS when Hemswell was sold to private development.

In 1985, the site was sold and developed into Lindholme Prison.

RAF Hemswell

The station was the home of 643 GS and the RAFA gliding club.  Under care and maintenance, there were no facilities on base and the mess at RAF Scampton was used (or the Cairnby Corner Cafe for convenience)

In 1974, the station was developed as a trading estate and the married quarters sold to private individuals.

RAF Oakington

Situated close to Cambridge, 5 FTS was operating Varsity T1 aircraft and a few smaller trainers for advanced navigational training.  By 1974 the station was transferring to army barracks use.

In 2000, the station was used as an immigration center.  It is now developed for private housing.
