Pterodactyloid pterosaurs cover all of the species which had very short tails or no tails. Pterodactylus gives its name to these pterosaurs. They all have a long wing metacarpal bone and generally lighter skull structures.
Pterodactyls are well studies as there are lots of species known from fossils. They have small teeth and long thin snouts. Many species were similar in size to modern day birds like crows or ravens.
Pterodactyloid pterosaurs show a wide variation in skull form and tooth development. They also have all of the largest pterosaur species within this group.
